BUILDING GREEN

Thursday, October 2, 2008

I'd like to share some of the resources I've found to be helpful, especially in learning about products and processes to implement in a "green" home. The following books and publications have been very helpful:

Books:

Lamp'l, Joe - The Green Gardener's Guide, (Simple, Significant Actions to Protect and Preserve our Planet)

Riley, Trish - The Compete Idiot's Guide to Green Living, (Earth-saving Solutions for Every Part of Your Life)

Wilson, Alex - Your Green Home (A Guide to Planning a Healthy, Environmentally Friendly New Home)

Periodicals:

Ecohome - www.ecohomemagazine.com

Green Builder - www.greenbuildermag.com

Mother Earth News - www.MotherEarthNews.com

Natural Home - www.NaturalHomeMagazine.com

National Geographic Green Guide - www.TheGreenGuide.com

This Old House - www.thisoldhouse.com

I've found all of this publications to be very helpful, and I look forward to getting them in the mail. They all have many creative ideas for anyone trying to make some efforts to live green. There are so many inexpensive ways for individuals to help to protect our planet and to live in a healthy environment.

Do you happen to know if any of the magazines are carried by the Reading Public Library? EcoHome is $30/yr and GreenBuilder is $40/yr, a little pricey for most city residents.

Great list Carolyn. For BCCF, the book that started it all was "Cradle to Cradle" by Bill McDonough. Many will remember Bill as our annual meeting speaker a few years back. It's available at http://www.mcdonough.com/cradle_to_cradle.htm

We searched the library's database at http://www.reading.lib.pa.us/ and found several "eco"- friendly publications, but not the periodicals Carolyn mentions. We sent the reference librarian an email to let him/her know there is an interest in having the publications available at the library.

We heard back from the library - they said, "Thank you for the suggestions. I was able to subscribe to Green Builder; however, EcoHome is not available through our periodicals vendor. The subscription will begin Jan 2009.
We also subscribe to ENR: Engineering News Record, which recently released an issue (Sept 22, 2008) that focuses on green contracting. In the Main Library, current issues are on display and back issues are in storage. Back issues may be requested at the Reference Desk."

Hope that helps!
